E.O. Hoppé: Unspeakably Queer

E.O. Hoppé: Unspeakably Queer is a landmark publication celebrating the LGBTQI+ portrait subjects of pioneering photographer E.O. Hoppé, whose work in the 1920s and 30s captured boundary-breaking individuals with extraordinary sensitivity and modernity. Created at a time when homosexuality was criminalized and gender nonconformity rarely acknowledged, these portraits reveal Hoppé as a crucial ally and chronicler of queer lives. The book brings together striking high-quality reproductions of Hoppé’s portraits alongside biographical texts and essays by archivist Mark S. Melville, illuminating the personal histories and cultural significance of the sitters. Featured figures range from well-known cultural icons to lesser-known but deeply compelling personalities, all of whom challenged conventions of identity, gender, and desire. An additional essay by Philip Hoare places Hoppé’s work within a broader historical and contemporary context, underscoring its enduring relevance.
